Everything Else Is Secondary

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.
Don't be trapped by dogma -
which is living with the results of other people's thinking.

Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And, most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
They somehow already know what you truly want to become.
Everything else is secondary.

Merry Christmas, 2008!

"An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Luke 2:9-12

Jesus was born into this world as a guiding source of light.
May we always strive to recognize the same
Christ-like nature in each other.

Namaste,
Merry Cristmas

The Difference between Money & Wealth

"Money is a symbolic expression of what we give value to.

.

Wealth is:

A progressive realization of worldly goals,

The ability to love and have compassion,

Good health,

Caring relationships,

Getting in touch with the creative source inside you

Which is also the creative source of the whole universe."

Four Simple Keys to a Fuller Life

1. What’s Best for All

The Power of Choice. Every one of us makes countless choices every day. Every choice we make has an impact on our lives. Even insignificant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the more profound its effect. For instance, how do I act towards that person who treated me badly? Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what I want in my life? Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.

How Do You Make Choices? If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for all around you. This foundation is to choose based on what’s best for all. Imagine a world where every parent, spouse, friend, teacher, businessperson, and politician truly did their best to choose what’s best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world.

It’s the Intention. “But how do I know what is really best?” you might ask. The answer is simple. It doesn’t matter. What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice. What matters is that whatever decision you make, you are clear in your intention of choosing based on what’s best for all. If it later turns out that you made what appears to have been a bad choice, there’s no need for guilt. Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what’s best for all, your conscience stays clear and open. This then allows you to more easily learn from your mistakes, and to live with a clear heart and mind.

What’s Best for Me, Too! Choosing what’s best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. An overly exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her to be a better mother to her children. So as we move through each day of our lives, let us remember to include ourselves as we do our best to choose what’s best for all.

2. Divine Guidance

Many Meanings for Divine. Guidance can come from many sources. Yet by opening to guidance from the divine, we open to the support of powerful forces greater than ourselves. The divine has different meanings for different people...

Happiness is Contagious

From the Deacon's Bench:

In a study published online today by the British Medical Journal, scientists from Harvard University and UC San Diego showed that happiness spreads readily through social networks of family members, friends and neighbors.

Knowing someone who is happy makes you 15.3% more likely to be happy yourself, the study found. A happy friend of a friend increases your odds of happiness by 9.8%, and even your neighbor's sister's friend can give you a 5.6% boost.

Graduation Week

Just a few thoughts as the 2008 class of the Program of Integrative Medicine traverses the final week of our fellowship - together.

Dec 7, 2008
The fellows trickle in... many beautiful moments becoming reacquainted with such wonderful people, kindred souls. We gather to share a meal at circular tables. The buffet held the familiar sights and aromas of healthy, tasty food. Happy faces, hugs, laughter - wow, how blessed I am to be back in this space. I share conversations with Layth from Michigan (a familiar face, an unfamiliar story) and Randy Horowitz, one of the fellowship instructors, who was amazingly a fellow in Allergy at the University of Wisconsin 1n 1993 when I was a medical student. What a small world.

What follows is another circle. A circle of beings in a room to greet each other, fill each other in on the last year. As our opening ceremony begins, Tieraona Low Dog and Victoria Maizes lead the way. The fellows sequentially present to their classmates gifts - tokens of themselves symbolizing what the fellowship has meant to them. 70 small but thought-filled, meaning-filled gifts. Lotus flowers, acorns, mandalas, poems, songs - expressions of our uniqueness, our journey, our compassion. As the ceremony closes Tieraona sings a song in her native tongue - we know not the words but are moved none-the-less. What a great beginning to that which is promising to be a wonderful week...

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be confident knowing you are a child of God.

Stillness

St. John of the Cross (1542 – 1591) says: “The soul must be attached to nothing, whether of sense or spirit, which would introduce noise into the deep silence, for it is there that God speaks to the heart, in this secret place, in utmost peace and tranquility.” And he adds: “The soul must keep a simple, pure and loving awareness, like one who gazes with the awareness of love.”

Stillness is a gateway to the spiritual. When we sit quietly long enough, stillness of body, mind and heart gradually develops. The body’s fidgeting, itching, and restlessness settle down as it becomes quiet and at rest. Often as we sit, waves of emotion and thought cascade one over another in our consciousness, but as we watch them pass, unmoved, not participating in them, they begin to slow, and may at times cease altogether. In that still place we can let go of our attachments and intentions, let go of our desires (even the desire to be still), let go of our willfulness. When we let go of our willfulness, our intentionality, then we are open and receptive to being touched by the Will of the Ultimate Source.

It has been said that “stillness is the language God speaks, and everything else is a bad translation.” Stillness transcends space and time. Becoming conscious of stillness whenever we encounter it, in ourself or in another, will connect us with the formless and timeless dimension, which is beyond thought, beyond image, beyond ego. It may be the stillness which pervades the world of nature, or the stillness in your room in the early morning. It may be the stillness on your bench or cushion or the silent gaps between sounds. Stillness has no form. That is the reason thinking cannot make us aware of it. Thought is form. Being aware of stillness means just being still. To be still is to be conscious without thought. This is our practice. You are never more essentially, more deeply, yourself than when you are still. When you are still, you are truly your Self beyond temporal existence: conscious, unconditioned, formless, eternal.

Today is Important

Happy Birthday, Mom

Mom, you're a wonderful mother,
So gentle, yet so strong.
The many ways you show you care
Always make me feel I belong.
You're patient when I'm foolish;
You give guidance when I ask;
It seems you can do most anything;
You're the master of every task.
You're a dependable source of comfort;
You're my cushion when I fall.
You help in times of trouble;
You support me whenever I call.
I love you more than I can express;
You have my total respect.
If I had my choice of mothers,
You'd be the one I'd select!

Thanksgiving Day, 2008

As usual, I arise at 4:30 a.m. eastern time, start the coffee and clean the kitchen while the joe is brewing. It’s a special coffee today – Spicy Pumpkin Pie. The aroma of cinnamon is comforting. Eventually, I call Stuart who is making his way through security at General Mitchell Airport. It’s now 5:45 a.m. (4:45 in Milwaukee). That pink hew of the coastal sky is starting to emerge through the kitchen picture window. The trees are still. The birds are singing in the new day.

Stuart boards his plane at 6:15 while we end our cell phone conversation. The phone rings at 6:20. “His flight must be delayed.” But, no, it’s Mitch calling to let me know they’ve just arrived at our home in Wisconsin. After working the night shift last night our eldest and Joanna, accompanied by Porter, their growing pup, drove the ninety minutes of snow-lined highways from Madison to our home in Richfield.

He speaks in a hushed voice, “We’re here,” as Shayne, our college sophomore, is sleeping on the family room couch. (He must miss his dorm loft bed … why else would he not sleep in his queen-sized bed in his bedroom? I wonder if he’ll miss not hitting his head on the ceiling when he awakens, too.)

Mitch sounds exhausted as he whispers, “I have to get some sleep.” He intends to get in a few hours of rest before preparing squash soup for the McLees family Thanksgiving celebration later today.

We won’t physically be with our sons or their significant others for the celebration to give thanks this year. Nor will we spend the day with my parents, siblings and their families cooking, laughing, and enjoying traditional treats: Mom's stuffing, Lori’s éclair torte, Todd’s bread extravaganza and Dad’s pecan pie. But, they and many others will be in our thoughts and prayers of gratitude here in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Love, Jackie

Stay active

I am convinced our own happiness requires that we should continue to mix with the world, and to keep pace with it… I can speak from experience on the subject. From 1793 to 1797, I remained closely at home, saw none but those who came there, and at length became very sensible of the ill effect it had upon my own mind, and of its direct and irresistible tendency to render me unfit for society, and uneasy when necessarily engaged in it. I felt enough of the effect of withdrawing from the world then to see that it led to an anti-social and misanthropic state of mind, which severely punishes him who gives in to it; and it will be a lesson I shall never forget as to myself.

The Gift of Solitude

Certain springs are tapped only when we are alone. The artist knows he must be alone to create; the writer, to work out his thoughts; the musician, to compose; the saint, to pray. We need solitude in order to find again the fine essence of ourselves: that firm strand which will be the indispensible center of a whole web of human relationships.

Happy 18th Birthday, Angela!!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANGELA!! WE LOVE YOU!!!

The Wooden Bowl

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess "We must do something about father," said the son.

"I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor."

So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?"

Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled

On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what happens, how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.

I've learned that when it comes to how we treat our family and loved ones, we should never treat a friend, neighbor, client or customer better than we would treat those we "love".

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles four things: a rainy day, the elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.

I've learned that, regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life.

I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing as making a "life.."

I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.

I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands …You need to be able to throw something back

I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you.

But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.

I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.

I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one.

I've learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch -- holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

I've learned that you should pass this on to everyone you care about as I just did.

Love, Jan

Obama Named 44th President of America

Barack Obama has been elected the 44th president of the United States as of 11:00 pm on November 4, 2008. Senator McCain concedes congratulating Barack Obama on his "historic" election as president of "the greatest nation on Earth."

This is a historic night. Quite a night to remember!! This just reinforces the thought that all Americans should be encouraged to Dream Big!!

USA Votes!!

Alex, my 18 year old son, and I got up at 5:45 a.m. to vote this morning. As promised by the news projections, it is a very rainy day in Chesapeake, VA and the polls are very busy. Our polling station opened at 6:00 we arrived at 6:20, we voted at 8:20. The atmosphere was calm, pleasant and full of hope! It was very helpful to have a highly energetic greeter who kept folks smiling and at ease. Once we made it to the front of the line, the individuals checking IDs were pleasant and very helpful. Our electronic voting went without a hitch.

Elsewhere in Chesapeake, VA there were difficulties with the electronic voting machines. We were fortunate enough to await our voting opportunity within the halls of Western Branch Middle School. Others not as fortunate waited in the rain for their opportunity to vote. As for many, today was highly anticipated in our household. Alex qualified to vote with only 6 days to spare (due to his August 26th birthday).

As I type this entry I am watching CNN where Vice Presidential hopeful and Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, is casting her vote in Wasilla, Alaska where it is 7:09 a.m. She is wearing blue jeans and a brown suede jacket - looking like the gorgeous mom next door. What a momentous occasion. Regardless the winner, United States history will be made today!! We've come a long way, baby.

I hope you exercise your civic privilege and responsibility to cast your vote today. Whether for Senator Obama & Senator Biden or Senator McCain & Governor Palin - please vote.

God Bless the USA.

Some Political Positivity...

This is quoted from an article that I read on yahoo this morning... No matter who you're voting for I think that this should ring true and should give some hope for where our country is heading - I have included the link to the full article as well and some of you will find that you have it in your email as well....

"I learned in just those three hours that this election is not about what we think of as the "big things."

It's not about taxes. I'm pretty sure mine are going to go up no matter who is elected.

It's not about foreign policy. I think we'll figure out a way to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan no matter which party controls the White House, mostly because the people who live there don't want us there anymore.

I don't see either of the candidates as having all the answers.

I've learned that this election is about the heart of America. It's about the young people who are losing hope and the old people who have been forgotten. It's about those who have worked all their lives and never fully realized the promise of America, but see that promise for their grandchildren in Barack Obama. The poor see a chance, when they often have few. I saw hope in the eyes and faces in those doorways."

Happy Birthday Lyndsy!!!

Please take a moment to wish Lyndsy Marie a very Happy 19th Birthday on November 7th!!

Fall from my point of view

"I love fall!

Fall is exciting.
It's apples and cider.
It's an airborne spider.
It's pumpkins in bins.
It's burrs on dog's chins.
It's wind blowing leaves.
It's chilly red knees.
It's nuts on the ground.
It's a crisp dry sound.
It's green leaves turning
And the smell of them burning.
It's clouds in the sky.
It's fall. That's why...
I love fall."

Autumn

"Autumn is a season of great beauty, but it is also a season of decline: the days grow shorter, the light is suffused and summer's abundance decays toward winter's death. Faced with this inevitable winter, what does nature do in autumn? It scatters the seeds that will bring new growth in the spring - and scatters them with amazing abandon .... Autumn constantly reminds me that my daily dyings are necessary precursors to new life. If I try to "make" a life that defies the diminishments of autumn, the life I end up with will be artificial, at best, and utterly colorless as well. But when I yield to the endless interplay of living and dying, dying and living, the life I am given will be real and colorful, fruitful and whole."

Thank You

If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.

And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.
